Why is Cannabis Product Development (R&D) important?

Product development is important as it assists in ensuring a safe, positive and consistent experience for the end consumers. It also assists with state regulatory compliance and guidelines.

Who Can Test

Growers, distributors, processors, infusers, seed suppliers, manufacturers, dispensaries, qualified caregivers, as well as medical patients can submit samples for the Product Development (R&D) Test.

Research & Development Cannabis Testing Process

The Product Development (R&D) testing process is a lot less complex than the Illinois Compliance test. This test is not reported to the state of Illinois and only used by licensed businesses to get more information about whether their developing products will meet industry standards. Product development (R&D) can be defined as a series of stages that a business would perform in order to bring a new product to market and ensure it complies with regulatory rules. It is often referred to as new product development since it typically refers to a new product, but it can also refer to products where ingredient changes are being made.

The first step in Product Development (R&D) process requires a conversation with an Origo Labs Account Manager to outline where a client is in the product development phase. Origo Labs will create a detailed step-by-step plan with the objective of delivering a safe and consistent final product that complies with state regulations and guidelines.

To submit a Product Development (R&D) Test, the client can either drop-off their samples to the laboratory directly or have an Origo Labs employee come and pick up the samples. Once the samples are received, they are tested and evaluated in the same exact way as the Illinois Compliance Test. A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) will then be sent to the client. If, for some reason, the sample fails, Origo Labs will provide the client with the exact issue that caused the product to fail, but the results are not sent to the state of Illinois. It is recommended to do Product Development (R&D) testing for new products/samples to ensure it will meet all state regulations and guidelines for cost-savings purposes, as well as finding out additional information around specific test attributes prior to the submission of the full Illinois Compliance testing.

We accept drop off samples Monday-Friday 9am-5pm at our lab located in the Jefferson Part area of Chicago, as well as samples sent via USPS, FedEx and UPS. We can also schedule a pick-up for locations across Illinois. To schedule a pick-up, please contact Origo Labs.

When samples are dropped off, picked up or shipped, please fill out and include a R&D Chain of Custody Form so we know exactly who is submitting the samples and what tests are being requested.

Each product requires a different amount of sample per R&D test. General guidelines are listed in the below chart, but please contact us if you have any additional questions:

Results

We use a reporting tool called QBench to post test results. All your results are accessible on your customer account  portal and can be recalled at any time. An email will also be sent to you when your results are ready to be viewed.

Turnaround Time

Our turnaround for R&D testing is typically 2-3 business days. Expedited testing options are available upon request.

  • R&D testing may be requested by anyone 21+.
  • R&D tests can be ordered at any time without the state issued guidelines.
  • State issued licenses are not required for R&D testing.
  • Results from R&D testing cannot be used to legally sell products to dispensaries or storefronts, but are a good way to gauge the quality of your products during cultivation, while also helping to decrease the failure rate of a batch before submitting it for official compliance testing.
